How is the town of Blacksburg doing these days?

When I was there in the summer there were a lot of empty shops in the downtown vicinity. Or at least I thought so. Has it always been that way and I just never noticed (because I was drunk)? Or is there a struggle to fill in some of the older parts of downtown?
