I don't like the argument about the tax benefits of a mortgage, either, that gets brought up. Yes, it's deductible, but you are still paying a ton of money that is lost forever, in terms of interest. Think how much money that is in a college fund.

You have valid points, pro and con, but for all practical purposes, it sounds like life is about the same. 5 mins away, as you say.

Interese rates will rise, and housing values WILL drop. Your current house may not have that equity in 5 years.

Is it really worth the added cost of hosting people 2 to 4 days a year? That is expensive partying.

You're in a situation that most would envy and jump at. This is a generational decision, to put your whole family in a better situation.

No offense, but your wife sounds short sighted and shallow, not long term thinking.
