Well, there are different CVT designs.


Guess you can go really general, such as the variable big wheel/little wheel design. They were developed for efficiency. They do a good job keeping the engine at the most efficient speed. They are also much less complex than the current 6/7/8+ speed automatic transmissions.

Not sure if you've ever looked at the way ATs are built, but they are very complex. I recommend everyone follow the manufacturer's maintenance schedule! You don't want to rebuild it prematurely.
