Ok, detectives explain this (inside)

I have a very distant relative that I've never met. Turns out she and her husband, and their one child (at that time) all changed their last name legally at the same time about 15 yrs ago. Only thing in common was first letter of old and new last name.

So, have at it - what would their reason be?
