Dick's in the NRV has already pulled all their winter merchandise
for the year. They have a few things on clearance, but nothing I liked that was in my size.
I like the Spyder jackets, but they seem awfully trendy in their styling. I'm looking for my 3rd winter coat in 30 years; I tend to keep them for awhile so I want something high-quality that will last, but not something that will be glaringly out-of-fashion in five years. This year's Spyders just look like the kind of thing that will look really out of place five years from now.
In my specific case, I really just want a single, very warm winter coat. I've already got light and middle weight coats, so I don't need one that can do it all.
Plus, I really hate wearing a bunch of layers. I've just never found it comfortable. When I ski, I wear a moisture-wicking t-shirt, a long sleeve shirt of some kind (t-shirt if its warm, fleece if its cold), and a coat. I don't want a coat that requires you to wear four layers underneath it to keep warm.
The coat I'm replacing is by Karbon. Got it cheap at the end of the season probably 10-15 years ago and it has been wonderful. I can honestly say my torso and arms have never, ever been cold when wearing that coat (even in below zero temps). I'd like something comparable to that.
