I probably didn't say that very well.

The actual action sequences were pretty weak, all things considered. Johnny was fairly decent, but was hardly the best either in his own school or in the tournament. Daniel looked like someone who had only trained for about six months, and no way he realistically stood a chance against people who had theoretically been training for 3-5 years.

When I say they got things right re. martial arts, what they got right was the philosophy behind it and how it can end up being a powerful force in a young person's life, depending on who their instructor is.

How the life lessons from martial arts transform you was done exquisitely. Fight choreography left a lot to be desired.

As for the tournament, it was OK. Even in the 80's, competitors wore hand and foot pads. Headgear was rare, though. But wearing full protective gear wouldn't frame well in a movie, so they left it out. Other than that, the overall feel of the tournament was pretty accurate. The rules they used were correct, the judges called the matches correctly (mostly...Daniel's winning kick was illegal), and the single elimination tournament format was accurate. The arena was jazzed up a bit for the movie compared to what you would have normally seen (typically a HS gymnasium).
