He just won the D2 National championship, so congrats to him on that.

It was not going to work out for him at Tech (or any top-15 D1 program IMHO) because he would not put in the work to get to the next level. Tech wrestlers work harder than you can even imagine. He worked just hard enough to win the starting spot, but not hard enough to beat on a regular, consistent basis top-20 talent ... and that doesn't cut it for Tech. If you get the spot, you then need to work even harder to win every match possible. I know for a fact that a number of backup guys on the team in the 184-197 range were packing on weight to challenge him because there were 3-4 lighter weight guys pretty confident that they could beat him.
