Depends on how often you want to re-stain it.


Solid stains last the longest. Go on like paint, so lose a lot of the wood's beauty.
Transparent stains last the shortest, but show the wood.
You may want to start with transparent while the wood is still new, then move to semi-transparent, and finally to solid.
I used Olympic Elite solid last fall, based on Consumer Reports ratings.
