Probably best our carriers weren't near Pearl...might have lost most of...
...them. We just weren't ready for the attack.
Midway was the exact opposite. We made all of the right decisions, and the Japanese made all of the wrong ones. Divine intervention? The Japanese were removed as the dominant sea power in the Pacific in one battle. But if they hadn't lost most of their carriers and their experienced pilots there, we would have worn them down over the long run. They couldn't match our production capability...no one could.
