I just don't know how to solve the problem in the sense of figuring out how you determine the "value" the US men's team brings to FIFA World Cup it could be Cleveland Browns (relatively terrible), San Diego Chargers (middle of the road), or New England Patriots (awesome and doubtful).
The only other thing I would say is FIFA distributes a base pay amount to each team for attending. They then give bonus money to each team as they get further in the tournament.
I think FIFA keeps the pay to teams "equal" so lesser country teams have the potential to build something if they get the same "money" as US.
Good discussion, guess my overall issue is I don't know how to quantify value in a major sporting event. I hope someone figures it out because I fundamentally agree with your underlying argument, I just look at the flipside and see billions being generated vs millions.
