Yeah, the degree of cousin describes the shared grandparents

in relation to the older (by generation) of the cousins. So if you are the same generation then:
if you share parents = sibling
if you share grandparents = 1st cousin
if you share great grandparents = 2nd cousin
if my grandmother is your mother = aunt
if my grandmother is your grandmother = 1st cousin
if my grandmother is your *great* grandmother = 1st cousin once removed

If my great grandparent is your great great grandparent = 2nd cousins once removed. The 2nd cousins because the shared pair is the older generation's person's great grandparent. The once removed because the younger generation's person has an extra generation to go through to get to the shared parents.
