Accurate points, couple things to add

The Japanese government was propping up their auto-makers so they could dump cars that had better quality at lower prices into the US market to build base. In addition to the Gov money they had two major competitive advantages.

1. No unions. Despite the problems with what US unions have become, at their core they have value in protecting workers. In Japan in the 70s/80s workers were closer to slaves than employees and were paid pennies on the dollar compared to their US counterparts.

2. Richard Demming. The Japanese, especially Toyota, took his TQM model as gospel. He had worked for Ford and Ford laughed him out of the US auto industry. His theory, that can be summarized as improve your inputs and processes and you guarantee the quality of your outputs, is the basis of almost every manufacturing operation in the world now.
