The act of placing dirt into the gerave is symbolic in the sense


of returning the body to the earth from which it came. Muslims believe humans are made of clay (or dirt depending on the translation). Also the body is removed from the casket and placed bare into the grave with only a piece of cloth that covers the body, as again, that is the form in which humans are born.
