Similar experience from a different season for me. On a ski trip
out west once, we were there to ski Vail and Beaver Creek for a week. But one day, we spotted a little resort called Arrowhead a few miles away.
The mountain was probably half the height of Vail. And there was no village to speak of. Only thing to do there was ski. But the lift tickets were half the price and I think in 1-1-/2 days of skiing there, I had to wait for one other person to get on the lift before me once. Unless you crave shin-deep powder on the back bowls at Vail (which I don't), the terrain at Arrowhead was just as good. There just wasn't nearly as much of it.
At Vail, I think about 4-5 runs was all you could realistically pull off in a day by the time you navigate all the different lifts and lines. At Arrowhead, you could do 4-5 runs an hour.
Don't get me wrong, Vail is awesome. But I honestly had some of the most fun skiing ever at Arrowhead.
