Maryland did stay when BC joined the conference though

and I don't believe there was any talk about Maryland leaving the conference at that time because the Big Ten was content with 11 members. It wasn't until Wallace Loh (a University of Michigan alum) became President of Maryland on November 1, 2010 that there was any rumblings about Maryland leaving the ACC. I say "rumblings" because I don't think too many too the "rumors" seriously. Otherwise, Maryland's "announcement" that was leaving the ACC for the Big Ten wouldn't have caught so many people off guard.

Honestly, I don't have a problem with BC or Syracuse. I will say my opinion of them is also contingent on the ACC's "end goal." If the ACC is looking to becoming a conference that basically locks down the East Coast, then it probably would need to have BC and Syracuse as members to do it. However, if it is looking to just remain a SouthEast Atlantic conference, then it wouldn't need BC, Syracuse, or even WVU (which is very close to the PA border) to achieve that goal. If the ACC was to become a super conference, then this would probably be my ideal scenario.

Atlantic - Coastal (based on protected cross-division pairings)
Syracuse - BC or BC - Syracuse
Pitt - Penn State
WVU - UMD
VT - UVA
Wake - Duke
NC State - UNC
Clemson - GT
FSU - Miami or Miami - FSU

Under this scenario the ACC would play a 9 game conference schedule with 2 cross-division games (1 protected and 1 rotating). I am not really a fan of the pod/quad model because the WAC tried it in the late 90s and failed. I don't think a power conference could make it work especially if a conference (like the ACC) has a lot of rivalries. At the same time I am not really a fan of these super conferences because at some point they turn into a confederation. However, I do think the super conferences could be used as a means to an end. The creation of 4 16-member super conferences could make it easier for the schools to break away and form a new division level within the NCAA without the risk of receiving political pressure from their state governments or even the federal government.
