As fate would have it, I've become a bit of a 'cat guy' in the twilight of

my life. Always had dogs - couldn't abide by cats, couldn't abide by 'cat people' either, to be honest. It always seemed people were one or the other. I was narrow minded about cats, to say the least. But 4 or 5 years ago, I lost the greatest pup ever - the crazy Rottweiler mix puppy that ruled the playground at the Portsmouth pound, and the one that everyone was afraid to adopt (the kids working there kept hiding her from the grim reaper until we showed up in relief - she could barely fit in her cage by that time). My heart still aches mentioning her, and I've ruled out getting another partly from that, and partly from my own circumstances.

But we have taken on strays here - chickens (ha), and at first one, now a second feral cat- a male who appears to have possibly been hit by a car, and healed improperly as he limps around. I also have 4 at the hotel where I work. 2 are quite at home coming inside in the office, all the while keeping the two wilder ones away (the backwoods boys, I call them). It's "cat politics", according to a 'cat person' co-worker. I've taken to the backwoods boys, because I don't like the bullying, and they have responded to me like no one else that has worked there, I'm told. Most people could get close to them, but not quite touch them. I've gotten to the point where I can call them out and pet them - meow at them, mimicking their very distinctly different voices, and have them meow back. They even follow me around when I check the property at night. I've now assumed the title of Director of Feline Experience at the hotel.

But really...me and cats? Who knew? Now, I haven't gone completely over to the dark side = ). Dogs are still the greatest, IMO. But if you love animals, never had a cat, and get a chance to save one or foster one...you might be surprised how cool they are, and how they will warm up to you with some patience.
And that's my PSA for the day.
