Although there certainly must be exceptions, I believe most people aren't forced to go into a certain field of study. And in sheer terms of marketability, there are always other factors to consider. I don't regret my choice to major in social sciences one bit. But I went into it knowing that I would have to pursue some form of graduate study to actually make a living -- which is what I did.

The equation of a college degree in general (or any other educational certification) with earning potential seems to be an increasingly discredited theory in today's economy. And folks motivated by paychecks can probably find greater satisfaction in pursuing a path that doesn't necessarily include a "traditional" degree program.

Ultimately on that note I am reminded of a great pearl of wisdom: "The world needs ditch diggers, too."
