I suspect we are nowhere close to capacity

From a land perspective, drive an hour anywhere in the US and you will be surrounded by open land (maybe a few spots in the north east would require farther travel). We humans tend to cluster in communities for social, economic, and cultural reasons. But we have tons of space available all over the globe.

And for resources, if you strip away all of the "wants" and focus on the "needs", globally we produce a ton of food. We have more than enough food, clothing, medicine, land, etc. to take care of what we have and more. And we have enough technology to help make more of key things like fresh water. Survival as a species and a planet should be easy at this point with the knowledge and technology that we have.

The core problem is not capacity, it is economics and tribalism driving our decisions as a species.
