Many years ago I had the thought "How long did it take for humans to make

bread?" And I envisioned the following sequence taking thousands of years. It starts with a hunter gatherer discovering some wheat.

Can we eat that? Yeah....tastes terrible.

What if we soak it in water first? Yeah, better, but still tastes terrible.

What if we grind it up? Better, but still tastes terrible.

What if we grind it up and THEN soak is in water? Hmmm, not too bad, I guess, but still tastes mostly terrible.

What if we cook the ground and soaked mixture? Hmmm, ok, I guess, but pretty hard. Now here's where it might be

Then the happy accident happens and the mixture is left out longer than they wanted, and it rises!! They cook it and HOORAY!!! BREAD!
