And the "oops, I forgot to tell the ump" award" goes to the Wahoos

As I was researching the UVA preview, I ran across an interesting play in last Friday’s Hoos vs. Clemson game.

Virginia jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the 4th. One of their runs was scored by pinch runner Emma McBride, who had been inserted to run for catcher Donna Freidman. After McBride scores, Freidman re-enters the game, but the Virginia doesn't tell the ump (as is required).

In the bottom of the inning, Clemson gets a runner on second with one out. Batter Bailey Taylor strikes out for the apparent second out. BUT, BUT, BUT, the Clemson’s coach, who no doubt was waiting for such a moment, calls out the oversight. The Wahoos are called for an illegal substitution, the strikeout is taken off the board, and Taylor precedes to blasts a double on the very next pitch, triggering a string on 4 Tiger runs in the inning. Clemson went on to win the game.

In watching the game replay, the UVA coach was interviewed on the ACC network between the top and bottom of the fourth inning, so she has probably gotten blasted for worrying more about the TV interview than officially subbing Freidman back into the game. Probably not a fair criticism, but since when are we fans fair?

Ouch, that may leave a mark.
