Dad had a interesting story about getting to the ship.

He dropped out of high school during his senior year to enlist in the Navy. He was sent to Great Lakes, and the snow was so deep they couldn't do much outside during basic training, but they finished on time and sent him to meet his ship. They sent him to Boston, but when he arrived they told him the ship was going to pull into NYC. He boarded a train to NY, and when he arrived there, they told him the ship wasn't coming there, but it was going to pull into Boston. Back on the train to Boston where he finally met the ship...

That was about the only story he told about his time in the Navy.
