I think the NCAA will grant an extra year
Once things settle down, Corvid-19 forgiveness on multiple levels will carry for a while (rightfully so) and the NCAA will error on the side of not looking bad. For spring, they're granting an extra year for all kids affected. There's a clear dividing line for something like wrestling where we know who was getting in to the NCAA tournament, where as basketball at VT is much more vague. Does VT argue they had a shot at going to a tourney to get these kids another year?
Back to wrestling....
The challenge will be where does the $ come from. The NCAA may very well allow teams to go over 9.9, but is that just next year, the next 2 or 3? Are teams going to be willing to eat the extra $ across the board, or can they be selective in how long they want to let a guy stay? Some schools would throw cash at wins, others would stay on budget, and some may handle it different and create a further imbalance.
I know a track coach with a Sr who was set to have a break out final season, but won't have the $ to float him next year and thus may not be able to keep him even if the NCAA allows it. They might be able to work out grad classes or something, or just part time classes.
