Probably more theater

If you wash your hands before you leave the house, don't touch your face while out of the house, be sure to sneeze or cough into your elbow while 6ft away from other people, then wash your hands again when you get home, you will be both as safe as you can practically be and protect others.

But you don't know if other people are doing that or not. Wearing a mask is a visible outward sign that you are trying to be careful to give others a sense of ease.

And maybe it serves as a reminder to not touch your face or sneeze on people.

But yeah, it is more like a TSA screening...a theatrical production we go through to make everyone feel safe as opposed to a proven effective countermeasure. Especially considering most of the masks people wear aren't very effective or worn consistently or correctly. Better than nothing, sure, but I've got more faith in social distancing, hand washing, and not touching your own face than in masks.
