Funny (sad) government stories
About 5 years ago, my cousin who was 64 at the time, went to DMV to get his CDL license renewed. Lives in Scott County and had to go to the Abingdon office, as it was the only one in the area that does CDL. He is a life long Virginia resident and got his Virginia learners permit at age 15 1/2, has held a Virginia license since age 16 and had a CDL for several years. The DMV would not renew without a certified birth certificate. So he had to go to the Blountville, TN courthouse since he was born in a Kingsport, TN hospital. To get the birth certificate, he had to show them his drivers license, which got him the certificate to get his (wait for it) - DRIVERS LICENSE!
When my daughter graduated from Tech as a math teacher, it was during the last recession. Math teachers are in high demand and she had her undergrad degree from Tech in math (3.95 GPA) and a Masters in education (4.0 GPA). A lot of local school systems wanted to hire her, but because of recession related budget restrictions, they could not commit immediately. Kingsport City schools had a summer high school position in math that they wanted her to fill immediately. Now for the rest of the story. It was 2 weeks before the spring Masters graduation. Until such date, she was not an "official" graduate. She had finished all her work and passed the tests necessary to obtain a Virginia teaching certificate. Kingsport would only let her teach if she had a teaching certificate and Tennessee automatically accepts a Virginia teaching certificate to obtain a Tennessee certificate. However since she had not officially "crossed the stage" to receive her Masters diploma, Virginia would not issue her Virginia certificate. Tech's staff called the Virginia Dept of Education and told them that she had completed all work and that walking across the stage was a mere formality. They refused to give her the certificate until after graduation date. So, she tried to just go directly to Tennessee to get a certificate. Tennessee's requirement of tests were a little different than Virginia, so they would not accept those tests she had already completed and it would be over a month before she could take the Tennessee tests. BUT remember, they will automatically accept a Virginia certificate. In the end, she did not get the summer job for the these reasons. Kingsport was left hiring a social studies teacher (with a very limited math education) to teach summer math. I am sure the summer students got a great math education.
