There seems to be two factions in the streets. Protesters and rioters.

In the week prior, the peaceful protesters seems to leave when it got dark and the rioters took over.

Anyone yelling at the police line in front of the precinct had every reason to expect trouble from their group. Or else why not do it during the day? Especially given the violence in the preceeding days.
