I was diagnosed with Celiac at 36. Immediately cut out gluten...

...and actually felt WORSE. I couldn't figure out what the heck was going on - my celiac symptoms pre-diagnosis were fairly mild, but after going gluten-free, I felt bloated and uncomfortable virtually all the time. It turned out I had also developed lactose intolerance, and I can only assume that somehow the inflammation from the celiac disease was masking that. As my gut began to heal, I was still eating dairy products, and the lactose intolerance is apparently what was making me feel uncomfortable. I gave up dairy for a while and started to feel better. Over time, as my gut has healed more, I've been able to eat a little bit more dairy. Apparently the enzymes that break down lactose are produced in the intestinal villi that are damaged by inflammation related to celiac disease. Or, so I was told.
