I remember very little from high school, but I remember our discussion group in College English in 12th ground surrounding that book. Was he some kind of hero who should be looked up to, or was he a selfish jackass who deserved what he got for leaving his family without telling them where he was going?

That's probably my biggest issue with him. If he wants to run around the woods with no survival training and kill himself, then fine. But at least tell your parents that you're going to be out of touch for awhile.
