To critique them you need to know the context. It's not all excuse making,
it's being reasoned. The question is did they make the right or wrong choice given what was known at the time.
Then, should past mistakes disallow current praise? In other words, if you did the wrong thing 3 months ago, can you not do the right things now?
If you lucked out, do you deserve praise regardless of the merits of your decision? Do you deserve praise for getting a better grade on a different test? Are you immune to criticism for that?
If you've merely done better relative to other places, do you deserve praise even if you could be doing or have done better?
