That's a "whole house fan"....we have one, too.

We never use it except during power outages...but man, is it nice to have then. I think this week marks fours years since a derecho tore up our neighborhood and knocked out power for several days. We have a decent-sized gas generator that can run most of our house, and our whole house fan was a Godsend then.
