No disrespect to those that have left, but the future is bright
I will start my post by repeating that I appreciation the contributions of the players that have left. Maddie Banks was a personal favorite, and her bubbly personality and sweetness will be missed. Al Velazquez batted .335 in 2019 although she struggled a bit last year. The freshmen who left seemed to be great young ladies, but they elected to take a different path and we wish them all the best.
But looking ahead, it’s hard not to feel optimistic about the future of Hokie softball.
Morgan Overatis (Michigan) and Alexa Milius (Central Connecticut) transfer into the program and I think those are two very good additions. Morgan started 14 games for Michigan, several at second base, and hit .277. In 2018, she was rated the No. 18 overall prospect in FloSoftball's Hot 100 Rankings and she was a 4 time All State 1st Team player in Michigan.
Alexa will provide nice catching (and infield) depth for the Hokies. She hit .374 with 18 RBI in 34 games in 2019 and was named to the all NEC rookie team.
On paper, the incoming freshmen class looks loaded. The headliner is Cameron Fagan, who was ranked as one of the Top 10 recruits in the country by Flo Softball.
Emma Ritter is an outfielder from John Carroll High School in Maryland, who coach D’Amour says “will be one of the fastest girls on the team.”
They are joined by outfielder Maddy Federico from Midlothian and utility player Addy Green fromn Suffolk, both of whom look like they have huge potential.
There are also two all state pitchers in the incoming class. Mackenzie Osborne from Richlands and Ivy Rosenberry from James Wood. Both should add nice depth to Keely and Kaylee in the circle. And speaking of pitching, both of those ladies will be a year older, a year more experienced, and provide a really great foundation.
Not having a fall season is a bummer, but I do think the future of Hokie softball is really, really bright.
