Dowd was one of the first if not the first to have the idea that


the recording studio could function like an instrument. Prior to Dowd, most bands were recorded to sound like they were playing live. Dowd's techniques paved the way for producers to transform the artist's sound, as in what George Martin did for the Beatles.
