I have a subcontractor client who for 90+ years maintained offices

in six Carolinas locations. Consistently one of the top family-owned firms in their field in annual revenue, awards and highly respected personnel. About 10-12 years ago they appointed a son-in-law as COO who had no experience in the industry whatsoever. The firm has all but closed down now but during COVID their competitors are thriving. All their key long-term professional staff have left in one way or another, largely in conflict with the COO. It's a formula for disaster to hire and promote an non-professional in such a business.
