I remember driving down I-81 after a quick trip to Blacksburg, when...
...the weather started getting "dicey." Most of 81 was OK, but the bridges started icing. I was in my trusty 94 Toyota (Hilux) 4X2 Truck, and did what smart drivers do in that situation, which is to ensure you have enough speed to make it across the bridge, then put the truck in neutral, keeping the wheels straight as you roll across the bridge. You want to know who was in the ditch just past absolutely every bridge? 4X4s. There were as many as 3 at the most, but the rest of the bridges had at least one. We're talking Jeep Grand Cherokees & practically every other 4X4/AWD SUV on the market. I turned down 581 at Roanoke, and was clear of icy bridges the rest of the way.
That told me the way I approach ice covered bridges was the correct way, so keep doing it!
