Phillippi is an example....

I think wrestlers avoid a familiar/tough opponent for several reasons: preserve a good record/ranking/seeding, psychological reasons (perceived, both ways), make opponent start fresh (no recent familiarity) and no first hand information if they've never wrestled each other before.
