HSA question

I paid for my root canal last week with some HSA funds I had left over from a prior job.

Apparently when they ran the final bill through insurance, my share was lower than they thought. So they sent me a check for the difference.

Problem is my current insurance doesn't qualify me for an HSA, so I can't make any contributions. There is no way I'm aware of to get this refund back into the HSA.

What can I do to keep this refund from being taxable? If I "in good faith" spend the money on health care this calendar year, is that good enough?
