Given the delay between when someone initially gets infected and when they actually show up as a positive case count, even if they got on top of it today, those numbers would keep growing at a high rate for at least a couple weeks.

Plus we know that while pretty much everyone undercounts the official numbers to some extent, the undercount rate in India is probably far higher for lack of resources/infrastructure compared to the US.
