With everyone who wanted one getting a free year (and most of the eligible seniors returning), there are more high level wrestlers going to be competing this year than ever before. When you couple that with the numerous programs that have folded, there are less teams to spread the talent over. Add in the transfer portal that top teams have used effectively to fill gaps and you get a very loaded top tier of teams and then a pretty steep drop-off. The fight for a top ten finish (let alone a trophy) is going to be harder than ever, even with our upgraded roster. I have a feeling this is going to be the way it is for a while as the transfer portal has really changed the game and made it easier for top wrestlers from smaller schools to bolt for the top programs.
