The only way something like that happens is for the colleges to get tired

of sharing their money with the lesser teams in their conferences. Why should the top 8 teams in the SEC share their money with the bottom, same for other conferences. At some point people might realize that the money generation is being done by the few. They would also have to be convinced that the cable tv dollars would continue even after their conference geographic footprint shrinks. With more and more moving to streaming, conferences will become more reliant on targeting people who are actually watching the games instead of people with cable subscriptions in a certain geographic area. I don't see signs of all of this actually happening. Even with people moving to streaming, they are still buying package deals of channels. It is more of a move to the earlier days of cable when there were fewer channels in the package. We are showing no real signs of a true a la carte model. If we ever truly move to an a la carte model then I could see a shrinking of conferences. Until then it is more likely that conferences get bigger.
