If you read the entire article …
We are not as bad off in aggregate as I had been led to believe.
While there is room for improvement in alumni and fan support, Clemson’s giving did not take off until they won the national championship.
While I am loathe to attempt an executive summary of this lengthy article, there were 2 things that caught my attention:
1) We are dead last in corporate sponsorship revenue among the P5 colleges.
This is on the AD. FULL STOP.
If we doubled this source of income, we would catch up to the next to last in corporate giving in the P5 schools… Washington State.
There is absolutely no excuse for this.
2) The money allocated for recruiting was based on a focus on in-state recruits and was/is in alignment with Wisconsin, which basically sticks to the Great Lakes region.
However, FU came in and decided, for whatever reason, to substantially abandon the state of Virginia and expand to states like Texas and with the same recruiting budget.🤯 That dog won’t hunt!
Hello, Whit, don’t you communicate with your coach on budget constraints?
Hello FU, don’t you communicate with your boss about your change in recruiting philosophy?
Something is bad wrong here. 🥺
Doing more with less is not a winning strategy. SMH
FB is about 37% of the total AD budget and that % has gone down from 2007.
OTOH, we have added new team sports since 2007 and that’s where the money has gone.
We have 22 teams now vs. an average of 15 teams in the SEC.
When are we going to add hockey, Whit? Those ice scraping machines can’t be that expensive. 🙄
Folks should take the time and wade through this 6500 word article that is based on historical, factual data and draw their own conclusions.
IMO, I don’t think that we are as bad off financially as some have led us to believe, but there is no doubt that there is a lot of room for improvement…. Fans and AD money management/policy disconnects.
Finally, this was a heroic effort by the author, IMHO, to gather this data in a meaningful way. 👍
