They didn't disappear...they just grew larger, and larger...


I miss my old "Hilux" size 1994 Toyota pickup, but I've grown accustomed to my 2nd gen Tacoma. I consider it a "mid size" pickup. To provide a point of reference, my 2nd gen Tacoma uses the same size axle housing found in the 1st gen Tundra. It had a V8, so the diff gearing was different, but the axle housing is the same size. At the same time, Toyota grew the Tundra into a much larger truck. It's basically the same size as the American pickups.

Back in the day, Dodge came out with a "mid-size" pickup with the Dakota, so I guess every other manufacturer decided they needed to grow their small pickups into that category.

The Maverick is the first truck to return to it's "small truck" roots.
