Yep, that's true. But most of Mac's best "artistic" songs were Stevie's.


I don't put too much stock in what songs sell best -- i.e. what Joe Q. Public thinks. The general American's taste in art (or music) can often be suspect.

Which is why it really wows me that Van Cliburn was who he was. Back in that day (for that matter today as well), you didn't see many great American pianists. Back then it was the Euros/Russians. Now it's Japan/South Korea/China. Americans just don't grow up around art that way (except for Cliburn, if you read a bit about who his mother was).

The American pianist's rule of thumb today is that no matter how great you happen to be, there's always an Asian standing right around the corner ready to whoop your a$$. In fact, it's probably more like a gang of 20 Asian pianists. Take a look at the lineup for the Cliburn or Chopin -- that really is the deal.
