The Roanoke Symphony had a contract with Van Clyburn to feature the winner


Of that competition in a concert in exchange for van Clyburn doing a concert in another year. I’m certain they did it twice as I was a percussionist/ tympanist and played with him twice and the winner once. (Hence PhoHos remarks below… encyclopedic memory that guy has!). I’ve told the story before of Van Clyburn flooding parts of the Hotel Roanoke! Great talent!
