If you really want to understand, consider the difference in cultures
The ACC is a strongly southern, country club environment. There is a lot of "wink wink nod nod" going on because people either can't or won't say what they really believe. If you are "in the club" it is assumed that you share the same beliefs and are working together for the common good of the group.
ND comes from a place where people are more direct. You assumed that because "you said one thing" that your behavior would be interpreted correctly. In the south, it is not what you say, but what you do that matters.
How do you think that racism survived this long in the south? Do you think that there were open conversations about it? Of course not. It is completely acceptable in the historical south to say one thing and do another.
The big question is this, "What was ND saying and doing in those club meetings? Were they using the misperception to their advantage, or were they righteously correcting everyone along the way? Clearly it was the former.
You are a lawyer. I can tell by everything you have said on this board that you see the world as very black and white. In the south it is just shades of gray.
Do you get it now?
