They get a bit too much grief for their actual impact

They are just one team. Any power they have, real or perceived, is because the media gives it to them. As long as they are valuable as a brand and as an independent, there will be people who protect it (NBC, ACC, NCAA, etc.).

Don't blame ND for making the most of what others are willing to give them. If anything, I'm amazed at their ability to keep the independence going for as long as they have and still make money off of it. I'm sure it will change eventually, but not any time soon.
