Proud of the team, sad that they were not placed into a position of sucess
I am very proud of the team and the way that they fought to the very end yesterday on the road in a tough environment. They had no business being in the game at the end, yet, there they were, almost in spite of the decisions coming from the sideline.
To me, a few things really stood out. First, our red zone offense is atrocious. The jet sweep to Tre Turner into the boundary, behind the side of the O-Line that was shuffled due to injury and poor performance. That call was awful.
Following that at first and goal from the 4 with 2 minutes left, CJF comments in the post game interview with Mike Burnop that "we were trying to take some time off the clock and then get it in". So, instead of trying to win the game on first and second down, we were trying not to lose the game. Of course those two runs up the middle got us to 3rd and 4th down that were complete failures and the loss happens. Win the game first and then ask your defense to finish it off instead of getting cute and then creating a loss.
Finally, I'm not sure our place kicker has the goods. That is two misses this season from very makeable distance. The missed field goal at the end of the first half caused us not to kick from the 4 at the end of the game to force overtime. You cannot miss field goals that are snapped from inside the 10...ever.
Finally, in the grand scheme of things, this team was never going to win a national championship. To that end, the loss is a bummer against WVU and not much more than that. This team still has the goods to win the Coastal and even the ACC Championship as I am far from sold on Clemson this year. Those goals are completely in front of us and are there for the taking. Hopefully our coaching will learn some things and will place our team in a better position for success going forward.
