And might as well not even try to haggle
We were in a situation where we really need to pick up a used car...reliable/safe introductory transportation for a new teen driver. We overpaid by probably a grand. We found a car at one of the first places we stopped, a local independent dealer. Car was about 2 grand over what we intended to spend. I was simultaneously trying to haggle my wife up by a grand and haggle the guy down by a grand. He said he had recently marked everything down and would not budge...ultimately said he could knock off $100.
We drove around for a couple of hours, stopping at probably a 6 or 8 similar dealerships. This is after doing some exhaustive internet shopping and occasional pop ins to places the previous couple of weeks.
We ended the day going back to the first place and buying that overpriced damn Chevy Sonic. It's a neat little car though and is serving it's purpose.
