Shatner's just an actor, he may or may not have had any interest in space, It would have been more apropos if say, the late Gene Roddenberry could have made it or as you suggest the guys from Houston control who all are probably around Shatner's age I would think.

It's a stunt, but it's fun, not trying to piss in the soup, otoh, he's willing to do it at his age, credit due.
