97 Miami OH & 98 Temple come to mind


There were other losses that stung (like 96 Syracuse, 98 Syracuse, & 98 UVa) because we "should have" won, but those were decent teams and/or had star players like McNabb.

97 Miami OH, 98 Temple (& *nearly* 96 Akron) were low points because those teams were awful and on paper we "should" beat them by > 20 points.

The ending of the 97 season, finishing 2-4 & culminating in a 42-3 loss to UNC that highlighted the talent gap between VT & UNC was definitely a low point. It's easy to look back now that we know how 98, 99, 00, and beyond turned out, but things were kinda bleak Dec 97/Jan 98.
