Something similar may be happening with VT in today's environment. Given that money is becoming an even more important factor in today's game and VT's probably with never having enough, it is possible that VT may be faced with a similar reality as those teams back then. In that VT can't generate enough money (including the ACC's TV contracts) to keep the programs' heads above water with the changing times. Right now it is a football issue, but it may not remain just a football issue depending on what other changes end up coming down the pike.
