"Better track record" is nonsense, easily proven wrong
Beamer
1987: 2-9
1988: 3-8
1989: 6-4-1
1990: 6-5
1991: 5-6
1992: 2-8-1
Cumulatively 24-40-2
Fuente
2016: 10-4
2017: 9-4
2018: 6-7
2019: 8-5
2020: 5-6
2021: 3-4 so far
Cumulatively 41-30 to this point
Even if VT loses out, Fuente can't end up with a worse record in his first 6 years than Beamer. Everything else is either not quantifiable at all, or highly subjective. Does the fanbase want to fire Fuente more strongly in October 2021 than they wanted to fire Beamer in October 1992? Maybe. But what I'm saying is there is nothing in the actual results of football games in each coach's first 6 years to suggest that Beamer was the one with the broader future and higher ceiling.
